Rehabilitation Services

Therapy services are offered five to seven days a week at all Laurel Baye Healthcare nursing homes on an inpatient and outpatient basis.

Physical therapy

After surgery or an extended illness, residents often require physical therapy to help them regain strength and mobility. Helping increase range of motion and flexibility, and providing instruction in safety, fall prevention and mobility are examples of the services provided by physical therapists.

Occupational therapy

Residents may need occupational therapy to improve their ability to dress themselves, bathe, or eat after an injury or illness. Through the use of specialized techniques and training with adaptive equipment, occupational therapists can help residents achieve greater independence.

Speech-Language pathology

Residents with communication or swallowing disorders, which are commonly the result of trauma, surgery or stroke, often require speech therapy. The therapists work with residents to help improve speech, language and/or swallowing.

Glossary of Rehabilitation Terms

Rehabilitation Team

Our rehabilitation staff consists of physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, occupational therapists, occupational therapist assistants, speech-language pathologists, restorative nurse and restorative aides. This therapy team works together to ensure the needs of each resident are met. Our therapists also receive training on a regular basis to help them maintain the skills necessary to provide the highest quality of care.

Physical therapists

Physical Therapists specialize in muscle development and motor coordination. PTs typically plan exercise programs and give advice on sports and activities. The physical therapist may use ultrasound, water therapy, massage, or other methods to improve joints and muscles. They assist residents in regaining strength and mobility after surgery or an extended illness. They may also recommend assistive equipment and provide instruction regarding the use of such devices.

Physical therapists assistants

They are supervised by are supervised by physical therapists and work closely with the residents, helping implement the exercise programs developed by physical therapists.

Occupational therapists

An Occupational Therapist is a therapist who evaluates the self-care, work and leisure skills of a person and plans and implements social and interpersonal activities to develop, restore, and/or maintain the person's ability to accomplish activities of daily living (i.e., eating, dressing, bathing) and necessary occupational tasks. They help residents improve their function of tasks such as dressing, bathing or eating after traumas, strokes and orthopedic surgery. By using rehabilitation techniques and training residents in the use of special equipment, occupational therapists help residents achieve greater independence with personal care.

Occupational therapist assistants

They follow the plans of care developed by occupational therapists and work one-on-one with residents to improve their level of functioning.

Speech-language pathologists

A Speech-language Pathologist is a health professional trained to evaluate and treat people who have voice, speech, language, or swallowing disorders - including hearing impairment - that affect their ability to communicate. They help retrain residents in breathing, swallowing and muscle control. Residents who have experienced traumas, surgery or stroke often require the assistance of speech-language pathologists in order to communicate basic needs.

How will I find a therapy services provider for my loved one?

When your loved one's physician recommends therapy services, a discharge planner, the doctor or a member of the doctor's staff may suggest a few providers. Talking with these recommended providers will help determine which one will best meet the needs of your loved one.

Who determines what type of therapy services my family member needs?

Your family member's physician in consultation with the nursing home’s licensed therapy staff develops and implements a results-oriented, skilled rehabilitation program specific to each resident's needs.

Will I be involved in the development of my loved one's care plan?

Yes, the development of each program involves the resident, his or her family, and nursing home’s team. Family members are also encouraged to participate in their loved one's regularly scheduled planning meetings.

Are therapy services covered under Medicare?

Therapy services are covered under Medicare if all eligibility and coverage requirements have been met. Please refer to Medicare and Payment Options under this section for more information regarding these requirements.
